NEWTONMANIA
to 12 September 2010
Roll up your sleeves and marvel at the natural forces of the world. Feel the acceleration and defy gravity: welcome to the wonderful world of Sir Isaac Newton! As one of the greatest scientists in history Newton is now the subject of a magnificent exhibition at Museum Boerhaave. Visit NewtonMania and meet the genius who changed our view of the world for ever.
Newton’s light in the Netherlands
Newton discovered the colours of the rainbow, explained why an apple falls and how the Moon revolves around the Earth. It is barely conceivable that Newton’s brilliant ideas were initially strongly contested. The fact that his ideas were eventually accepted is largely thanks to three professors from Leiden University. Nowhere did Newton’s light shine so brightly as in 18th century Netherlands. Science became a true hype. Large numbers of civilians tried out microscopes themselves, pointed telescopes at the night sky and breathlessly attended scientific demonstrations. The highlight of the exhibition is Newton’s famous Principia Mathematica from 1687 - the most important scientific book ever.
Come and experiment
But you can do more than just look: in a physicists’ playground visitors can experiment themselves and follow in the footsteps of the most important physicist of all time. Come and race, swing and collide, and experience the magic of the laws of nature. Play with gravity, inertia, friction, swing pendulums, spin centrifuges or pull at pulley systems. Physics at its best, without boring formulas! Through 22 games you can learn about how the laws of nature work.
