Stages of pregnancy, 1875-1900, L.Th.J. Auzoux
The French doctor Auzoux devised a procedure for making all kinds of models in papier-mâché. These were used mainly in medical education. Beside complete human models he made a number of models connected with reproduction. A nice example are the 8 models representing the various stages of pregnancy. Auzoux made not only models of the normal course of events. He also made two examples of ectopic pregnancies. Auzoux shows in minute detail in these models how it happens that an embryo does not implant itself in the womb but gets stuck in the Fallopian tube, which has adverse consequences for the embryo.
