Snail, L.Th. J. Auzoux, 1875-1900
Inv. V09989
Louis Thomas Jérome Auzoux was a true artist in papier-mâché. With this material he could make the invisible visible and the unmanageable manageable. Tiny objects could be enlarged so that certain structures were better visible. One of the most spectacular enlarged models is this snail. This model can be dismantled so that the internal organs of the snail become visible. If you had always wanted to know exactly what was in the snail's house, Auzoux gives you the chance in this model. Another striking thing is great degree of detail in the tiny organs. Therefore there must have once been someone who with the patience of a saint took a snail, but a real and of course much smaller one apart, with the purpose of serving as an example for this papier-mâché model.
