The Museum Boerhaave has an exhibition area of some 2.000 m2 and shows some 400 years of advances in knowledge.

Visitors begin their tour at the reconstructed Anatomy Theatre. Passing through twenty-three very contrasting rooms they traverse five centuries, from late-medieval herbals to the comparatively recent electron microscope. In adopting this chronological arrangement the Museum Boerhaave differs from other science museums, which as a rule have devoted a separate room or department to each subject area. The museum opted for this arrangement because it is a cultural-historic museum and scientists in the past were universal. Only in the late 19th century did specialisation penetrate the medical professions and the universities. Consequently the most recent developments in medicine, chemistry, physics and astronomy do each have a room of their own.
