It became possible to preform lengthy sophisticated operations especially on account of the development of machines that could temporarily take over the functions of some of the organs of the body. J.Jongbloed’s heart- lung machine in Utrecht was a first, important step. It meant the birt of a new surgical specialism. As a result of this a new generation of instruments appeared, partly base don the familiar repertoire.
