Cathode rays, positive ion rays and Röntgen’s X-rays received a lot of attention around 1900. The more so because nobody knew the exact nature of all these rays. The radiation that had been added to the list in 1896 was even more mysterious: radioactivity. The right explanation for this phenomenon could also only be guessed at. Were electromagnetic waves or particles emitted? The answer was discovered later on: both.
