Achieving low temperatures was one thing, but to be able to use these low temperaures for scientific research, more was required. For this purpose Kamerlingh Onnes designed his ‘cryostats, in which he allowed the liquefied gases to evaporate in a controlled fashion. In this way he ensured that the temperature remained low and above all constant.
