Ear nose and throath

One of the medical specialists to emerge in the ninerheenth century was the ear, nose and throat doctor. His daily practice included the clearing of airways constricted by swollen tonsils, objects caught in the windpipe and tumours on the larynx and vocal chords. A demand arose for specific instruments such as tonsillotomes and for bone or coin-retievers for removing forgeign objects from the windpipe.
