One famous society was Felix Meritis in Amsterdam. In order to accommodate the members’ divers activities, a spacious building was constructed on the Keizersgracht in 1788. In these engravings, dating from about 1800, the four principal rooms are shown in full swing. There was also an astronomical observatory on the roof.
