The Amsterdam researchers Deiman and Paets van Troostwijk used this giant apparatus in order to separate water into two gases, hydrogen and oxygen, by means of electrical discharges. The experiment by these two Dutch Chemists supported the new theories of the French chemist Lavoisier.
