Petrus Koning (1787 1834) was apprenticed to the Utrecht Professor of Medicine Jan Bleuland at the age of thirteen. There was no chance of him actaully studying since he had not attended the Latin school, which was a prerequisite for admission to a university.
The professor instructed the young Petrus in the fundamental principles of anatomy and medicine and saw to it that he was appointed curator of the university;s anatomical specimens in 1807. From 1815 onwards, the young man was himself permitted to demonstrate the art of dissection to students.
In his spare time Petrus Koning constructed nearly two hundred anatomical wax models according to an art developed in the late eighteenth century in Italy. From 1826 he placed this collection on public display in a room close the Anatomy Theatre. Following his early death, his former emplyer acquired the collection.
