An important collection of animals was the belonging to the Utrecht Professor of Natural History and Director of the National Veterinary School, Theodoor Gerard van Lidth de Jeude (1788 1863). His teaching contract required him to give lectures in zoology and comparative anatomy, but he preferred to spend his time expanding his collection. His primary interest was the horse and its close family. Van Lidth de Jeude prepared some of the specimens himself, and in his field he was a master of omission. His technique reveals a systematic appoach: he displayed only what is relevant.
After his death, parts of his collection where purchased by the University of Leiden. For more than a century his specimens were to be used for teaching purposes in the Zoological Laboratory.
