Determining one’s position at sea is the essence of the art of navigation. By angular measurement, it had been possible to establish one’s geographical latitude accurately from the height of the stars since the 16th century. For the longitude, however, one was dependent on a clock that was reliable on board ship, which only became available after 1780.
