
Among the foreigners who came to Leiden to consult Boerhaave was the Swedish biologist Carolus Linnaeus. During his stay in the Netherlands from 1735 to 1738 he laid the foundation of his system of classification of the three natural kingdoms. In Leiden he was given great support by Boerhaave and published his celebrated Systema Naturae.
The reputation of Leiden physics was upheld by Petrus van Musschenbroek, to whom ´s Gravesande had handed over the Newtonian torch. In his lectures he also paid far more attention than his predecessor to applied mechanics and the instruments used by surveyors and sailors.
Because his successors shared his interest, the Leiden Cabinet of Physics acquired many models of useful devices after 1740. The principal manufacturer was the Leiden instrument- maker Jan Paauw Jr
